What It Looks Like When You Turn Holiday Photography Into Mini-Devotions

Turn Holiday Photography Into Mini-Devotions

The most wished-for electronic item on Amazon isn't a phone.

It's not an e-reader.

It's not a tablet.

Can you guess what it is?

It's a digital camera.

Perhaps this doesn't surprise you. There's something special about cameras, especially during the Christmas season. We want to capture the very best moments in life so that we can cherish them long after they pass. Moments like a baby's first Christmas; the choir concert when 4-year-old Aidan picked his nose in the front row the entire time; the turkey that was tragically burned to a crisp after the timer mysteriously faltered (it wasn't funny at the time but we suspect we'll laugh about it later).

In other words, cameras and Christmas are like peanut butter and jelly.

This year we have an opportunity to make this camera-Christmas-combo even more meaningful, and it's not hard. Here's the challenge:

Holiday Photography Challenge

For every snap of the shutter (smartphone pics included!), say a prayer of thanks to God for that moment. And if there are people in your frame, thank God for them, too.

The challenge looks something like this:

Dear God, thank you so much for the belly laugh I'm having at Aidan and his gross nose-picking habit that is now on public display. Thank you for him and his quirky personality and how he doesn't care what others think of him. I pray that he'll keep that boldness for his whole life and use it to serve you. Amen.

Or this:

Dear God, thank you for this Christmas candlelight reminding me to take a long, deep breath after this hard day and rest in your peace. Thank you for the peace you bring to all of us, and for your son, Jesus, the ultimate peacemaker. Please spread his peace throughout the world tonight, especially in places where violence and conflict are growing. Amen.
